ok, i posted this on another forum and have just pasted it straight to here again but i still need/want to know the same thing.. if anyone knows!
long story here basically i have a high quality TV capture card and i record straight to MPEG2 and ive reformatted and had to re install
some codecs but ive had a problem with the playback of them
ok.. ill try and explain this as best as i can but i tend to get a bit confused with this so i might lose u..
ok, first i installed some MPEG2 codec off the internet because windows media player wouldnt recognise these MPEG2's
that i was capping..
also before i couldnt view MPEG2's as thumbnails in winxp (i could only view mpeg1's as thumbnails)
this codec let me view them as thumbnails AND play them back in wmp beta9 (remember wmp wouldnt play them before i installed the codec)
BUT the thing was, when i played back my MPEG2's using this codec, i could notice visible tearing in the playback of vids
so i installed another MPEG2 codec (i think the second one i installed was a plugin codec for TMPGenc)
this codec was much better and there's now no tearing when i watch my mpeg2's under this.. BUT this codec always displays a gay
3x3 cube in the top right of the movie when its playing and its annoying, its like there logo for the ppl who make the codec or something,
so if you somehow managed to follow this.. theres 2 things i'd like to know..
1) why dosent WMP9 support MPEG2's / do you know any good MPEG2 players?
2) and does anyone know the best MPEG2 codec to get? ONE that dosent give you any logo's in the top corner of the screen and dosent
give you any tearing when you watch them??

Mpeg-2 is not supported in the Windows Media Player because the mpeg-2 codec is not free (and not owned by M$). M$ would not pay anybody for the codec, so they don't include it. Also, M$ wants to make their own codec so they have full control over it.
As for mpeg-2 codecs, Ligos is a good one. Download a free version of Ulead DVD Moviefactory or Videostudio, and it will install a mpeg-2 codec that can be used by the Windows Media Player. -
ok thanks, ill try it, hope they dont have any logo's on the movies when u playback

install latest powerdvd, the best mpeg2( also DVD,SVCD) player. And with it you will able to play mpeg2 with media player also.

yeah, i dont like the look of powerdvd etc, i'd rather use a DECENT codec with windows mediaplayer, so ill try anything!
thats for the info bauldric ill try it now and get back to you later -
well for me my MPEG2 capture card installed a MPEG2 codec so I can play MPEG2 through WM Player 6.4, installed the Capture card software on another computer only and it allows me to play MPEG2 through WM player 6.4 also, its installing a codec from PowerDVD.
Also you can install WinDVD 2000, it works nice also for MPEG2, easier to use over PowerDVD(my opinion only). -
As for capping straight to mpeg2, I haven't found anything that will work on my system. ATI's software is buggy, no matter what version I try. (I've been experimenting for two years.)
None of the third party software that I've tried seems to work, either.
For playback, I use WinDVD. I've tried ATI DVD, PowerDVD, and WinDVD. ATI DVD's codec gives me audio/video sync problems, and PowerDVD was just plain buggy.
Edit:
I've also tried Ligos. It worked okay. I haven't used it since my system has been running smoothly, though. If it ain't broke...
