Which is better for capturing? Is there speed issues when using an external standalone dvd? i HAVE A apex 1100w that has just died (already) and want to start backing up my dvds? if you get a dvd that sits in your case do you have to find a macr hack for it like with a standalone?
Any advice would be appreciated.

There is a big difference between capturing and ripping.
Capturing, in the context of desktop video, involves the conversion of an analog video signal into a digital. This would typically involve connecting a macrovision free DVD player to a capture card and recording the analog output.
DVD Ripping involves actually unencrypting and copying the original MPEG2 video stream from the DVD. This is preferable to capturing a DVD as the video will not contain the noise that is introduced in the analog conversion. DVD Ripping typically involves installing a DVDROM in your computer and using a piece of software such as SmartRipper. Macrovision and CSS copy protection will be removed by the ripping software. -
Dave part of this is not ture you can have macrovision DVD player or even HW decoder unless you stuip enough have bough ATI card which junk anyway.
95% of all other capture card don't see macrovision.
But you rigth about ripping but take a lot longer to do.
You best option is REALtime HW MPEG encoder -
Inhich language is that last post written? It's hard to tell...
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
