DVDs are regionally coded - US/CANADA - Region 1, EUROPE - region 2, region 0 = play anywhere and so on. So a movie bought in the US (region 1) will not play on an unhacked European player (region 2), most hacks let you select the region for your player. This is only really useful to us poor saps in Europe who usually get the latest releases a couple of months after the US. Other hacks allow you to remove Macrovision (copy protection) from disks allowing to record to VHS or something (this usually involves modifing the hardware).
