  1. I am trying to encode a movie ( any format ... currently DVD) and no matter what I choose the aspect ration gets changed every time. I select Full Screen (keep aspect ratio) and it makes it from a widecreen that is quite longer horizontally than vertically into what looks like 4:3, every time. What should I do to correct this. It happens with all movies and all formats. Please help I can not stand these distorted movies any longer. Thanks to everybody that chimes in on this one.

  2. Make sure the source setting is the same as your source video. Are you using TMPGENC's vcd template from the DVD rip.

What software are you using to rip the DVD and what is the source settings (widescreen, etc.).

  3. I did not rip the DVD myself. It is actually a AVI file ... a VCD rip. I am using TMPGENC. I have saved the audio as a Wav using Virtual Dub. I select DVD under the first option on the TMPG's wizard setup. I then choose the sourse file and the source audio. Under aspect ratio I have it set as 1:1 VGA. Next are the filter settings I do not have to mess with the source range because I am burning onto a DVD and there is plenty of room. I go into "other settings" and in the Video Stream Settings that I can not change it says that the display is 4:3, 29.97fps and the size is 352x480. When I watch the original with WMP it looks short in height and long in width. So I do not understand where the 352x480 comes from. I hope that is enough but not too much info ... thanks for the help.

  4. I think your problem is the 1:1 setting in the source aspect ratio. If you do not know the original source aspect ratio select, if it is letterboxed select 16:9 if it isn't select 4:3. You may also want to experiment with the many variations of these as you will see the next time you look at tmpgenc.

Now, depending on what you ultimately want to do with these you may want to select 1:1 and fix the perspective while you are preparing whatever media you plan to burn it with. As Bartman was kind enough to teach me last night. Thanks again by the way

However, your problem is that TMPG is not smart enough to know the original aspect ratio of whatever you are encoding. 1:1 matches pixel for pixel the old resolution to the new one, thus it will look funky now that you have made a 1:1 conversion and changed the resolution of the movie.

  5. To keep the aspect ratio / screen size the same I always use Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2) setting which works....

  6. Just saw that you were looking to burn onto a dvd. Check out this thread where Bartman solved my problem. It answers a lot of questions about resolutions and preserving aspect ratios for burning onto dvd.
