How does it come that I can watch NTSC VCDs (we have PAL TV system here) on my standalone DVD player? This does not work with NTSC videotapes on a VCR.

Perhaps because your dvd player (at least mine does this) allows you to view NTSC disks on a PAL output and vice-versa

Your DVD player converts the NTSC signal to PAL 60, your VCR probably doesn't (you can buy models that do though)
