i'm pretty sure this should be easily possible. i just want to be sure.. i currently have windows xp pro installed.. i'm just having massive issues with on-line gameplay, ftp services, and a myriad of other things.. its basically a port issue with xp pro.. and for the life of me, i cant figure it out.. i was previously using windows xp home edition, and had no issues whatsoever.. so it dawned on me, i could run a dual boot system, xp pro & xp home.. i know through previously fandangling that you get a choice to pick which o/s you want to launch, cos i had 2 windows xp pro's installed once accidentally. heh..
but pretty much, this should be cut and dry? just pop in the xp home disc and install on the same drive as the xp pro drive? then i'll get my choice of o/s to launch..

You will need to create a second partition on your HDD or install it on a seperate HDD otherwise it can get pretty messy.
It is possible to install it on the same drive but if it goes tits up for some reason then your MBR will take a distinct dislike to you.
Assuming you have your current O/S on drive c:/ then create a formatted drive d:/ and then it's a simple case of popping in the cd and pointing the install to it. -
Before you do anything, there is NO chance that installing XP Home will help you in any way. "Home" has LESS of the features you would need to help any compatability issues.
Did you try "Compatability Mode"? This usually works for me. Also check "Internet Firewall", I mean the one included in Windows. If it's on, shut it off (this caused havoc with me). If this doesn't help, I absolutely guarantee that "Home" will probably be the same or worse for you.
I have run into the rare program (mostly badly-programmed game emulators, etc) that simply WILL NOT RUN in XP. If that's the case, set up a dual-boot with Win2k or 98 if you have them (but remember to install XP or 2k last, otherwise it will act like a single-boot system). This may mean you have to do a 98 install to the second drive, then an "over-the-top" install of XP Pro again.
Once again, "Home" will NOT help you, if "Pro" already doesn't. Take care. -
thanks for the replies...
homerpez - sounds like a plan.. thats kinda what accidentally happened last time.. heh

wellmashed - not exactly true.. i actually had xp home installed previously on this computer.. clean install.. i never had any port issues about firewall or anything.. i was able to play high heat baseball 2003 online, send & recieve files through aim, setup and ftp server, serve files on irc, and many other things that require port-ish stuff... after a while, i got my paws on a copy of xp pro.. formatted my harddrive, did a clean install.. now i cant play high heat 2003 online, cant send or recieve files through aim, ftp serving is dead, and serving files on irc doesnt work.. an obvious issue with the ports.. i've disabled the built in firewall, i dont have any anti-virus or firewall programs installed... its something with windows xp pro thats screwing me..
any further suggestions? -
If you do decide to use two os then i would suggest you use partition magic it works great.
This is proboly a ice cream induced thought so i can not take no control for the above statment. :P -
sounds like a good plan. i happen to have that drive in my archive of warez.

on a sidenote. i think i may have figured out the issue.. okay.. so i was having "issues" with my router earlier today.. so i hooked it straight up to my computer, whamo. everything works fine, portwise.. so i'm like "hmmmm.... maybe its the router settings".. i open up every ******* port on it.. damage.. still fuct.. and then i notice that i get this gayass "internet connection" icon in my 'network connections' folder when i connect to the internet through my router, which i never got in xp home.. only in xp pro.. i've gotta figure out how to deal with this bitch now. i'm sure thats it.. but thanks for all the help guys, i've pinpointed the problem, and now i must devour it..
and jexster, watch your back ************. this shit is gonna go down like a train wreck.
