The DVD Workshop 1.2 Update Patch provides current version 1.0 registered users with a number of new features and program fixes. This update includes:

--Multiple Aspect Ratio/Bit-Rate support - Mix existing, DVD compliant MPEG files with different aspect ratios (16:9, 4:3) and/or bit rates without the hassle of re-encoding. Maintain the qualities of your source video.

--Enhanced MPEG.Now™ encoding - The latest release of the MPEG.Now™ codec makes both DV-to-MPEG capture and file transcoding faster than ever. Benchmark results with a Pentium 4 processor show up to a 59% improvement in capture speeds over the previous version for DV-to-MPEG direct capture.

--LPCM audio encoding - Author DVD titles with LPCM (Linear PCM) audio for broader set-top player support.

--DVD+R support - Adds DVD+R to existing support for DVD+RW and DVD-R/RW to provide the widest in compatibility.

--Improved burning performance - Save time by writing directly to DVD without first creating a temporary disc image.

And more fixes; see site for details:

Has anyone else noticed DVD Workshop 1.2 seriously overestimates required disc space when you go to make an ISO image?

One example, out of three or four today....

I imported THE CONQUEROR WORM onto my hard drive from my ReplayTV 4160, recorded in medium quality. File size about 2.5GB.

I started a new project in DVD Workshop 1.2. I put the movie file into it. Did the "cut title" thing to get rid of AMC's commercial break. Didn't put in any chapters or menus. Went to the "finish" step and clicked "make disc."

Even with "do not convert compliant DVD file" checked, DVD Workshop told the required disc space would be 4.5GB! Too big to fit on a blank disc. Just for grins, I made an ISO anyway without burning the actual disc.

After the ISO was complete, I clicked "burn image." Guess what? This time it told me the required disc space would be 2.5GB! And I burned the disc with no problem at all.

Is this a new bug with version 1.2? 1.0 did NOT do this....

  3. I loaded a 3G mpeg 2 file in DVDWS v1.2 went to finsh, clicked make disk (audio mpeg 1 layer 2) and the required disk space was 3G. Not much help.

If you click "make image", Wkshop will STILL create a folder containing all the ifo's, bup's and vob's needed for the project.
So maybe the estimate is for HDD space required, not DVD disc space.
    I don't have a bad attitude...

Problem there is, in the "make disc" dialog, there are separate details for "hard disk space required" and "disc space required."

In my case, the DVD disc space required was shown as 4.5GB and the hard drive space required was 8.9GB. Turned out the DVD space required was only 2.5GB, barely more than half what DWS told me it would be when I first hit that "make disc" button.

  6. In my case with a mpeg 2 of 3G and only 'Record to disk' selected:

DVD 'available disc space' = 4.4 GB
DVD 'required disk space' = 3.0 GB
HDD 'available disk space' = 60GB
HDD 'required disk space' = 3.0 GB.

    Just happened again......

Imported the 1972 version of Tales from the Crypt, recorded on my ReplayTV 4160 from Fox Movie Channel, medium quality, file size 2.1GB.

Gave it 11 chapters, one for the movie start, appearance of the Crypt Keeper, each of the short stories within the movie, the epilogue, and end credits.

Gave it a couple of menu pages, 4 chapter buttons per page.

Hit "make disc," "High Quality 8000kbps," "Create image file," and "do not convert compliant file." The dialogue showed "required disc space as 5.3GB," too big for a disc. "Required hard disk space" showed 15.9 GB. If I unchecked "do not convert," required disc space shrank to 2.1GB. I checked it again, unchecked "burn disc," and hit start.

After the iso image was complete, I hit "burn disc image." The required disc space shown was 2.4GB! Barely more than half the 5.3GB DWS told me it would take the first time. I burned the disc with no problem.

    What's up wit dis?????????

    Thanks...

    Hi Lamont,

Nope, haven't tried anything other than MPEGs from my ReplayTV. I really don't think the ReplayTV is the culprit because I wasn't having this problem with DWS 1.0. Problem only started after installing the DWS 1.2 Upgrade Patch.

    Thanks...

  11. I figured out what dws is doing and i don't understand why. When it makes your dvd files it also makes an encoded .mpg file of the video and places in the project folder. So basicly there is two versions of the video, one made into dvd files in one in .mpg. I 'm sure this is done for the encoding, but it looks like dws could delete the .mpg once it is finish. I haven't found a way to make it do so. So if you go to the Ulead Folder in My Documents and find the folder that corresponds to the project and then delete the .mpg files out that should give you just the DVD files.

And maybe it's counting both the original MPEG file and the converted MPEG file when determining how much disc space it needs for the finished product? That might explain the massive overcount of needed disc space when I click "make disc."

That sounds like it'd be an easy bug to fix once Ulead gets around to it (hopefully soon)...........

  13. This question was posted to newsgroup with no solution. Perhaps someone can help:
I downloaded the 1.2 update patch from Ulead and when attempting to install
it, I get an error that tells me 1.0 could not be found on my system.

When originally installing 1.0 I let it use the default paths so I can't
figure out why the updater can't find it.

I had that same problem the first time I tried to install the patch. Then I had a few other problems pop up, and Ulead Tech Support told me uninstall and reinstall the program from scratch. I did, and not only did those other problems clear up, but the 1.2 patch (which I didn't mention to Tech Support) was suddenly able to install.

Don't ask me why, I'm clueless on it. But that's something you might want to try...
