I have this movie in pure 16:9 format, not black bars on top or bottom.

I want to rip it to a SVCD keeping this format to be able to see it in my widescreen TV as I do now only with less resolution.

    Is it possible?

    How?

    Thank you.

  2. Far as I know the aspect ratio will not look correct when played. Unless you have a 16:9 tv. Even in that case I would not know, b.c I do not own one and never read of anyone owning one and trying a 16:9 SVCD.

  3. To keep your anamorphic (16:9) movie all you have to do is set the DAR flag (Display Aspect Ratio) to 16:9 in your encoder. It'll make the movies fill the screen on your widescreen TV without the black bars, but you have to remember that if you watch the movie on a regular TV everything will look tall and skinny. DVD players have a tendency to ignore the DAR flag when they play back VCD's and SVCD's and will display everything to fill the screen regardless of the TV ratio.

Hey LeeBear that sounds natural and easy to do but I'm quite a newbie so could you give some more detail please?

I use TMPGEnc (it suports multithreading!) but I have some doubts on how to do it right...

I Create a .d2v file with DVD2AVI but when I load the SVCD PAL template in TMPGEnc the video settings are locked.

Ok, I load the unlock template and in the video settings choose 16:9 aspect ratio. And in the Advanced choose 16:9 in source aspect ratio and what about video arrange method? Full screen?

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

  5. Yup you have most of the settings right Trimegisto I usually set the video arrange method to Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio 2).

Unfortunately, the SVCD spec calls for an output of 4:3, there can be no variation from this and be compatible.

If you really want to retain an anamorphic ratio, try to encode at 352x480 which is a legal DVD resolution. Half-D1.

You can find some pretty good guides and and TMPgenc templates over at www.kdvd.org.

After reading what they have to say, you may even opt for one of the xVcd templates.

I use variations on the KDVD templates myself and at both full & half DVD resolution I always keep the anamorphic encoding.

A word of caution, not every DVD player likes anamorphic video at 352x480 so you'll have to experiment ...

16:9 source encoding has nothing to do with the resolution, MoovyGuy : a legal source in VCD will be 352x288 (or 352x240) no matter what the aspect ratio. You can encode an anamorphic source and be compliant with the VCD or SVCD format. I've done this since the beginning.

As for the ripping process, there's no big deal. In the various tabs of TMPGenc you just declare your result as a 16:9 (tab video, aspect ratio) and your source as a 16:9 (tab advanced, source aspect ratio and video arrange method to full screen).

I was referring to the output aspect ratio not the source, nor was I strictly referring to the resolution.

What I was suggesting to Trimegisto was a way to retain an anamorphic output, as SVCD output cannot, by nature of it's spec, be anamorphic.
