I believe thet that drive does NOT support overburning. I have the same one, and I think that the 78 minute is your "time" limit

I used to have that same burner. Overburning has nothing to do with it, thats something entirely different. However this drive will not burn past ~78mins or so. There is another brand of burner, Sony I believe, which is literally the exact same piece of hardware except with a different firmware. Someone hacked the Sony firmware so that it will work on the 8100 HP model. I flashed my burner with it and it allowed me to burn the full 80 mins, whereas before I could not.
Sorry I don't remember where I got the firmware but if you look around you might be able to find it, its a fairly well known hack. -
sony crx-100e.
same as/hp 8100
hope this helps. cant find the link
beware your warranty if you flash an hp w/ the actual sony 1.0n firmware it will show as a sony after that. 8) -
I believe that changing the firmware is not necesary, you can tweak some of nero's settings (don't remember wich exactly, something with cd length and some other stuff), and then burn really really slow (max 2x), then the writer is supposed to be able to burn a full 80-min disk, but the disk might not work on some cd players, or it will but some tracks will not play correctly.

No not with this drive. This has nothing to do with the burning program. The amount that can be burnt by this particular drive is locked at about 78 mins regardless of what settings you use in Nero, or in any other burning program for that matter. I contacted HP about this a long time ago and they specifically told me that they did it on purpose to prevent wear and tear caused by potential overburning. The only way to burn more than ~78 with this drive is to modify its firmware as described above. It worked for me quite well.
