  1. I just downloaded a movie off of the net, and I've been having problems making it a VCD...?

Does anyone else have problems, and does anyone else know why the frame rate is always so freaking low on these? 12 fps or 14 fps? What's up with that?

I'm going to try and burn another movie today... Hopefully, It'll work...

People like sharing AVI's....the high compression ratio makes them smaller and easier to download....but its this comprission that effects quality and your complaint....fps.

  3. They are trying to make the files very small. I have afew that are like that. The Ney Guy is only 12-15 fps.

  6. Most of the divx avi's I download are of a standard framerate, either 23.976, 25 or 29.97fps. However I tend not to download divx films that are less than 600Mb. If you download films which are only a couple of hundred Mb then you have to expect substandard quality, either from a very low bitrate or a reduced framerate.

You hit it right there, craigtucker. Part of my search when looking for stuff to download is to assure they are 600mb or more...I have downloaded a few avi's that weigh in 715-730mb and they all make the change to VCD in excelent shape ( even when fit on one CD)...they look better than the tapes I have. Any thing with small files aint worth messing with.

  8. Wrong, its not always true that small files are crap, I download a DVD Rip Screener of a Movie and it was 324MB for the entire movie, granted it was only 85min. but still came out perfect on 2 discs on SVCD and looked as good as some DVD's I have seen from that same Mickery Mouse Company . Yes any AVI in 2 files split if they are less than 200MB each then they will look pretty bad, but then again for just to view the movie for free to see if I want to even see it in the theaters or buy the more higher Quality DVD later its worth it to me, none of these movies from the net unless you get a very very good DVD screener can even coming close to the DVD quality of the release later, and those that do is just the movie not the tons of extras that the DVD includes like the 4 Disc set of Lord of the Rings with the extra 60min. added back into the film, or Pearl Harbor with over 60 shots added back into the film. I did not set up a THX certified system with 3 DVD players and a Home DVD Recorder, Laser Disc with 5.1 sound to play sub standard movie rips as my final movie on VCD or SVCD, though the DVD RIP of LOTR does sound good on 5.1. That is the only movie I have seen and heard that even comes close to an original DVD from the net.

    Are'nt you contradicting yourself here.

On one hand you are saying you downloaded a 324Mb movie which was "perfect", which I find very hard to believe, and on the other hand you are saying that any movie below 400Mb will look pretty bad. Well did it look pretty bad or was it perfect.

I also have a pretty good home theatre set up, (36"widescreen 110W per channel 5.1 amp, blah, blah, blah) and obviously a downloaded divx converted to VCD is'nt going to compare in quality or features to an original DVD. But downloaded Divx movies don't cost £15-20 a piece. Obviously if its a film I really like I will buy the DVD to get the full benefit of my system. But for films that I may only watch once or twice or want to preview before I buy, downloading is a good option, and I have found that a divX needs to be around the 600Mb mark for the quality to be acceptable to me. This obviously is'nt the case for everyone as quality is subjective. What is acceptable to one person, may not be acceptable to another.

  10. Exactly, I only download movies that I want to preview. If I like the movie, I go out and buy it, for the good quality.
