i am using a creative sb audigy card that has a firewire connection in it also, my video capturing seems fine with very little frame loss ,but i keep hearing of capture cards and am now wondering if i should be using a dedicated capture card and if so why?

It would all depend on your source of capturing. If you're using a dv camcorder, then your Audigy should be fine, as you would ideally use firewire to transfer video from dv cams.
If your source is analog (VHS, Video8/Hi8, etc), then you would need a capture device/card.
