  1. I need something that captures video well. Origonally I was thinking of the ATI All-In-Wonder 8500 but I really don't like this all in one device because upgrading 3D acceleration would mean loosing the capture ability aswell. So I started looking at these external devices. I've been reading up on a lot of USB devices and apparently they are terrible, so firewire is left. Apparently these DV devices are very good at capturing, but most reviews assume the user who reads up on these reviews wants this device for use with their analog or digital camcorder, I don't. Well that's not exactly true, I do have a Digital8 camcorder with DV capabilities, but I don't plan on capturing from it as much as I will with normal analog devices.

What I want is to capture through S-Video onto the computer, and convert it to Mpeg2. The dazzle website says it captures up to 740x480, but what about 480x480? Yes I want to convert what I capture to SVCD format? On the dazzle website it mentions under requirements CD BURNER, and beside it says for VCD, S-VCD and DVD so I assume it captures in 480x480 but I want to make sure it's as simple as that. The point of these DV devices is simplicity, no playing around with drivers or anything so I REALLY like it .

The system I will be using with this, is a P4 2.26Ghz, GF4 4200 and a 80GB Maxtor HDD so there shouldn't be any problems. So anyone here with a Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge? If so then could you please tell me how it is, and how it compares to a capture card? What about resolutions, and converting to Mpeg2, any problems with that? I was considering also capture cards, but what I can get are crummy, have loads of problems and the picture quality ain't what I am looking for. If there are also other devices that are better and hopefully cheaper, please tell me .

    Thanks for the help.

The frame-size of DV is somewhat fixed (PAL 720x576 NTSC 720x480 where does this 740x come from?).So the easiest way to make a SVCD is:
Capture the analog video with the HW Bridge as DV (I prefer Type-1),
edit it with a Video Editor (I'm using ULEAD Mediastudio), convert the result to SVCD mpeg-2 and author it with an DVD authoring program (like ULEAD DVD Moviefactory).I've done sucxh many (>100) working SVCDs, which play on any decent standalone player.Qualitywise like good VHS.
But beware: Dazzle tends to drop some frames (1 per minute with my system)

  3. Great stuff. You said you have some frame dropping, would you mind telling me your system specs so I can compare to mine?
