    Can this be done?

I have some funny video clips and other mpeg clips that I've downloaded from the net. I'd like to merge or splice them into a mini-movie to show my friends. But whenever I try to do it with TMPGenc or CombiMovie and other programs, I get a message that they are incompatible.

Is there a program that will convert various types of video files into something that will each be in a similar format and therefor be "compatible" with each other....so I can splice them together then?

    thanks

It sounds like you are trying to join Mpeg-1 and Mpeg-2 files. That you cannot do. Any programs like TMPGenc or bbMpeg will convert from one to the other and then allow you to join them (maybe). Look under the Mpeg Tools in TMPGenc. There are stream conversion and merge/cut tools. For Commercial software, try Cinema Craft Encoder, Video Studio 6, Media Studio Pro, M2-Edit, etc. Mpeg-2s are notorious for having cut/join problems which unsync the video and audio streams. It also happens a lot after conversions. Mpeg-1s (like AVIs) are much easier to use (cut/join) but the pic quality will be lower depending on your source.
    Hope that helps...

    Ok, I see.

I just encoded each one to VCD and that converted them all to a compatible form that TMPGenc then spliced/merged together.

    Awesome!

    thanks
