  2. hey!!
Thanx for that - I spent 2 hours 2day trying to get to grips with mirc 0- ended up uninstalling it and deleting it all, but now I'll try again 2nite. Just one thing - when I was in some the channels asking questions i either got no response at all - or responses were very slow coming through - i know it's not my connection so why? Are people on IRC generally unhelpful? or was I missing something?
    cheers

It all depends on the channel, some of them you cant even speak in. You also have to realize that half the time there isnt any one around. Some channels are more helpfull then others.

  4. When I've tried to use IRC I have run into two problems:

    1. ridiculously long queues
    2. Getting kicked for inactivity after 30 secs.

How are you supposed to wait in a queue for a minimum of several hours, but up to several days when you have to have some activity every 30 secs!?!

  5. 1. ridiculously long queues
the more time you spend using the program the better rooms you will find that have smaller and shorter queue lines. Even though some of the lines seem long, they arent. You have to realize some of the bots send at rather fast speeds. Ive been in a queue position of 20 and had the send start with in 90mins. Its all about finding the rooms, takes some time, but its not that hard.
    2. Getting kicked for inactivity after 30 secs.
Personally dont know about that one, never been kicked or bumped off becuase of not doing anything. For the most part my cpu is always connected to IRC, anyone who serves, their system is also connected. Might be something to do with your isp, dont think its due to the program itself.

i believe he is referring to when the dcc chat session ends. Usually, they time out after 30 seconds but you are still in the que. Just be sure to remain in the channel that you are, and the file will be sent to you when the time comes. Also, just a word of advice, when you are scrolling through the advertized sites (triggers ect), look at how many ques they allready have. That will give you a better idea if that is the one you should jump on. also, servers that only send one file at a time may be painfully slow, but that is just my experience.

  7. Possibly the rooms I have been in or the setting I have on the program. If I am queued for something and I don't do anything for about 30 seconds, I will get a message saying:

"Closing Idle connection in 30 seconds."

    Followed after 30 secs by:

    "DCC session closed"

I am not set up to serve, just "leeching" while I get the hang of it. Does that make a difference?

Also, can you suggest a few rooms that have the latest movies with shorter queues. The rooms I have visited not only have long queues but the queues are almost always full.

  8. thats due to you having a dcc send pending. Unless you plan on being at your cpu 24/7 when your queued up for something you may want to turn on your auto get. Now realize that when you do this, anyone can send anything to you. There is a chance some idiot could send you a virus, i know that in my time i havent gotten one, but have heard of people who have, so choice is yours. To turn on auto get, follow this:
    dcc--->options
    new box pops up.
click on the dcc--->then check auto get file.
one other thing you should do, if you have started getting a flie and for some reason you get cut off, you can set your options to auto resume. its also on that same page where you set your auto get, there is a scroll box right underneath, just change to resume.
    hope that helps

  9. it was on Auo Get and I tried again just to be sure and the same thing happened.

Just to double check you're talking about the box that says:

    On Send Request:

    - Show get dialog
    -Auto Get file and Minimize
    - Ignore all

    Right?
    Quote Quote
  10. - Ignore all

    Right?
that means your going to ignore all incoming file types, probably not what you want to do, right??
also go into your folers section, where you saw the stuff above, on the left there will be a folders, click that, make sure your ignore option is change, i have mine disabled.

  11. Yeah, I've got it on Auto Get, I've got the Ignore disabled and I still get kicked. I'm stumped.

If it helps, the Closing Idle Connection message comes from the server.

e.g. <[NM]-Ramirez> Closing Idle connection in 30 seconds

  12. Yea, let it close it doesn't matter, just don't leave the room or your queue will go away. If you don't believe me set something to queue then close the DCC Session and redo the trigger and there should be a command in the F-Serv to see the queues it has and you will be in there.

A question that I have always wanted to ask, but thought that I might find the answer on my own if I just keep learning:

what the hell does queue mean? Exactly...

I have used p2p programs alot, but there is no such thing as queueing on the ones that I have experience with. Winmx and IRC is a different story. Also:

How does bandwidth figure into filesharing?

I have a cable modem and a fairly fast connection. From trying to learn winmx, I figure that bandwidth has alot to do with getting files quicker, right? Anyway, I don't even really know how to ask the question, but if anyone out there can tell me what I need to know in order to use mIRC (I'm still learning of course!) and winmx, I would appreciate it greatly.

    Peace,

  14. A queue is just like a line in real life. Here's an example:
You are at a bank and there are 2 bank tellers already with people and then within the line their is another say 20 people. When you walk in you have to wait behind those other 20 people whilst the bank tellers go through and serve them all before you can do your banking. Well that is the same here.
You want a file from another person but they are only allowing 2 people to download off them at the same time (the 2 bank tellers). They have also set up a queue of 20 say, that means that 20 people can line up (like the bank). If you are not one of the 20 then you have to wait for a spot to come available in the queue. Once you can get in the queue you then have to wait whilst everyone else in front (the other bank customers) get their business done then leave before you can start doing your download.

  15. I am slowly figuring our MIRC & lst night I actually downloaded an .MP3 file, My first success! Anyway, I have A Cable Modem, yet my Download was only at 15 KBPS (Pretty Weak!). Are there any Channels strictly for us High Speeders, seems silly to have a Race Car & drive it at 15 KBPS!

P.S. - I am not registered, is there any benefit to registering (will it get me into better Channels?) Is there a cost to register?

    -Thanks-

Another word of advice is to stay away from the ISO channels. Most of them have files that are broken down into small .rar files of around 14mg each. That means you queue a bunch of files, download them, do the chat request and queue some more until you get them all. A 500mg file might have 25 parts and then you have to put them together with WinRAR. Annoying! IMesh is okay for a P2P with decent speeds, but the fake file nuts are starting to invade like over at Kazaa. Keep plugging along with the IRC channels. Try not to go into the ones that have the most people like #newest-movies on Dalnet. Way too crowded, always cues, and ads run so fast you hardly know which server to try to leech from. Try to find a good channel that you can go to consisitently because even two servers in the same channel, having the same file will name it differently so if you get cut off and want to resume you must resume to a file with the same name and size for the resume to work. Very important things to remember.

  17. @mrebman- It doesn't cost anything to register your nick and it has a couple of advantages. Some channels won't let you in and some won't transfer files without you having a registered nick. It will also keep anyone from pretending to be you.
