Has anyone heard about these. "Blue-laser light, with a shorter wavelength than the red variety, can be honed into a finer beam, enabling it to read and write more bits of information on a given area of disc space." What does this mean? That in about a year or so when these come out we'll be able to write about 27 GB of info on one DVD (one side!!). You'll be able to backup about 3 DVD movies in digital DVD quality on one disc. Any Comments??? Heres the website: http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-839895.html

yeah...such a shame that all the current "stand-alone" DVD players will not be able to accommodate such a disk.

Perhaps common sense will prevail and they will finally begin using MPEG4 instead of 2.
Then the space required for a movie will decrease and the larger capacity will finally do away with double layered and double sided discs.
No more flippin it over...no more slight pause...glorious! -
Common sense is a very subjective thing. To me it would involve improving media so that less video data has to be thrown out, and not changing to MPEG4. But to each his own.

Thats what I meant.
MPEG4 is an improvement over 2.
If more capable video compression methods were not the answer to every new generation of video disc advancement...we would still be using MPEG1. -
Again, whether MPEG4 is an improvement is a strictly subjective evaluation. As a lossy compression method which throws out even more video information, it is most definitely not the direction I want to see the technology go, even if it is good from an Internet distribution perspective. What I want to see is better physical media that can hold more data with better fidelity (i.e. less compression).
