Gen 3 DVD-R media

Seems to be appearing, albeit mostly in "Beta" form (does this mean rather than bin them, the manufacturers sold them on cheap?).

Anyone know the difference between Gen 1/2/3? From my discussions with various retailers it appears to be just that the dye is very dark in Gen 3, and a vague feeling that they'll be better than anything that's come before. Whoopee...!

The main difference is they play on everything (well every make that I have tried) and they are very cheap, "forget your apple's"

Where did you see these gen3 dvd-rs? I would like to try testing them.

I'm in the UK. There are a couple of online shops selling them, bigpockets.co.uk and somewhere else I can't remember. They both have the same spiel with the discs:

This is the disc that "DATASAFE" will be using for their SilverPremium DVD later this summer. They have supplied us with some of the unbrandedversion so that we can make them available to our customers while we are waitingfor the fully branded product.

The top surface of this disc is silver with no branding or logo, and thewriting surface is dark purple.


Call me cynical, but doesn't "so that we can make them available to our customers" really mean "so the guinea pigs can see if they're OK"?

Anyone done some testing with these discs yet? and does anyone know where you can get them in the U.S.?

The "silver top" unbranded Gen 3 are very good, played in everything I've tried them in. Still only burn at 1x in my Pioneer 104, but they're probably more reliable that way anyway.

I have got another batch of different Gen 3 media, and they're not quite so good. The Sony players didn't like them.

By the way, the disc identifies itself as "Prodisc G01".

I am trying to purchase 1000 pieces in the UK at a reasonable price, so I've conacted the manufacturers in Taiwan and am waiting for a reply. If anyone is interested in buying some from me, let me know. Likewise, if you know of a trustworthy UK reseller who offers value for money, let me know.

I bought my samples from bigpockets.co.uk, and let's just say it took over a week, several phone calls from me, and lots of lies and broken promises from them before they eventually sent them out.
