  1. Alrighty, Have spent the better part of the day trying to figure out how to increase my rip speed using Smartripper. Have posted many questions regarding this issue and have seen many other threads concerning this same issure - namely ripping speeds using smartripper.

I increased my ripping speed from 1.4x to about 2.1x to 2.4x by enabling DMA for my hardrives. My DVDRom is a Samsung SD-612B and supposedly supports DMA. However, when I enable it in the Device manager Tab, my computer crashes when I try to unlock the vob's in Smartripper.(regrardless is I have played it first in PowerDVD)...So, I have come to the conculusion, that this drive ranks up their with Toshibas and is a piece of shiatt!!! Therfore, I aim to purchase a new Drive ASAP. So I ask, what is the brand and model number of your far superior DVD drive? So far, I have heard that LiteOn (via sean madison) is the way to go, as well as Pioneers. However, I would like to see an impartial list of drives used so myself, and others who intend on upgrading their drives, can make a decision based on objective information. Since drives are so cheap (35.00 - 50.00), I find this to be a well worth upgrade.

Thanks in advance for you info. Also thanks to Stanwebber in regards to my earlier posts regarding enabling DMA for my harddrive.

    Cheers.

  2. I use a Pioneer 116 in DMA mode, rips avg about 1.6x or so, but I am not concerned about the rippping speed, as it's not that long. I use DVD Decryptor v2.4. My A03 has been converted to ride the 1394 ( from www.caloptic.com )bus so I can rip( on the 116 ) and burn ( on the A03 ) at he same time while I surf as well.

  3. I just bought a 16x Cendyne last week. ($49.00)

The first time I tested Smart Ripper, I saw the numbers go as high as 14.7 but don't know if it was the actual ripping speed or the average.

Mine's a generic Compaq 16x drive (came with a Compaq 7000 that bit the dust) and DMA is enabled for the DVD-ROM and 3 HDs. Primary HD (with Win XP) and secondary are on primary IDE, =3rd HD is master on 2nd IDE.

When I rip from DVD to 3rd HD (30GB free) I get 3-4x rate but when I rip to 2nd HD (10GB free) I often hit 10x rate.

Not surprising ripping to main HD is slow (2-3x, probably cuz Win XP is a little busy)

This test was done without removing redundant programs. When I unload extras (ie antivirus program, etc) I may get higher than 10x but probably not much more.

I think ripping speed is dependant on the drive you are using. I'm using dvd-decryptor not smartripper. With my old Afree DVD-rom drive it took quite a while to rip a full dual layer dvd. With my Pioneer 500M (which is UDMA66) it takes 15mins (with peaks up to 12x.)

  10. Raite 108H DVD drive, says 8x but I constantly rip at 2.2x at best. Running WinXP with DMA enabled on all drives, aspi layers are current.
Even tried running as only drive on IDE channel with 80-wire cable. Just cannot get above 2.2x rips. I don't know what else I can do. Willing to upgrade drive if I know for sure that would help.

  11. Samsung x16 SD616F, DMA ON, ATA-80PIN CABLE, SLAVED TO DMA 2 WITH
UDMA 66 LITEON CDRW. COPYED TO DMA ENABLED 7200 RPM MAXTOR
    HDD.

    WIN98se: 14.6x Average (15.2 x MAX)
    2000: 12x Average (13.4 x MAX)

    -------------------------

If your DMA is enabled, the maximum rip speed obtained is THEN mostly due to "MAINBOARD" PCI latency.
