Checkout the above. Current lasers and dvd players can read "only" 9 gigs on a dual layer stamped DVD. DVD-R +R can burn only approx 4.3 on a blank dvd. You can't burn a dual layer dvd (yet if ever) In order to get 2 hours of 19.2 Mbps ATSC MPEG2 (hdtv) you need alot more than 9 gigs and the blue laser dvd players would do that but everybody has to buy a new expensive blue laser equipped HD-DVD player.
Micro$oft has pimped the makers of of settop player chipsets to include support for Corona (their proprietary MPEG4 based new codec) in the next generation of settop DVD players. Same wavelength lasers but mpeg 4 encoding at 1920 by 1080 instead of Mpeg2 at 720 by 480. The output would NOT be the same stream as ATSC as ATSC is 19.2 Mbps MPEG2 but should look pretty damn good. I don't know who's gonna win but never count the bastards at Micro$oft out.
