  1. I have a 712 MB DivX file I would like to fit on 1 CDR. Is there any form of compression that will get this to 700 or maybe 701 MB? I tried WinACE and ZIP on max compression to no avail (I know the movies are already compressed but I thought I'd try anyway)

I guess I can split the file into 2 with VDub, but golly gee I hate to do that for a measley 12 MB!

    thanks for any ideas

If your burner supports it try overburning to fit that last 12megs on to the disk, you must be using Nero to do this, its the only program I know of that supports overburning; found under the file/preferences/ expert features location.

  3. thanks for the reply. i do have nero, but an extra 12 MB seems like alot for overburning! overburning this much data on a 700MB CDR works??

Using nero, i managed to get an extra 14mb onto a 650mb cd-rw disk with overburning so it can work, try it!

  5. and overburning this much data (i.e. 15 MB) won't cause (or run the risk of) damaging the burner and/or other hardware?

i have tried to do 2-3 minute overburns for audio CDs using Nero in the past and it hasn't worked - that is why i ask the above. when i try and burn 82 minutes of WAVs to a 80min CDR, the last song(s) on the disc will not work (skips, etc).

i can't see why data would be any different, but if anyone can confirm that this works and is safe, i'll try it!

Overburning will be dependent on your drive, but just try to drag and drop it into the layout and see the timeline. I have had plenty of DivX downloads which were 700 meg + and they fit easily.

I have been able to overburn more than 2 Meg, but I've never tried 12. If your drive supports it, you may want to consider the 90 or 99 min CD's. If you live in the US, you could pick up 99min cd's at Comp USA. They are the Comp USA brand and come in a 16 disk pack. I have used them and they work well. I have a 32x drive and burn at 24x, they fail when I burn at 32x.

  8. Dude, just burn it! Those 700 MB/80 min CDRs actually have around 807 MB of space for data without overburning. The 700 MB/80 min limitation is simply for Redbook Audio, which reserves extra space per data block on disc for error correction. That level of error correction is not needed for video data such as your DivX file. There is no need to further compress your DivX file, it should burn just fine. When you get a file of 812 MB, then you might have to do some overburning. My Brother's BTC CD Writer doesn't seem to support overburning, but I have recorded as much as 806 MB on one disc without any problems.

To be able to burn divx in mode2 form2 (800mb on a 80 min/CD) you must use this method http://webs.ono.com/usr016/de_xt/mcf.html but this method is kinda new and may cause some unknown problems...

Akai: did you use that method or do you have any special method??????

  10. i have a 24x TDK VeloCD - i have overburned on it before, but only like 1 MB (i.e. 701-702MB on a 700MB CDR).

now i'm curious about the mode 2 question for data overburns

It should burn, I've burnt up to 730megs onto one of those cds

I find my system likes to measure in minutes

  12. ok i guess i should have done this awhile back: i loaded that DivX file into Nero (as a data-cd), hit burn, and on Nero's burn window dialog, the file checks in at 81:09 / 714MB. so if Nero is going by the "minute length", i guess my CDRW should handle this ok with an overburn.

    thanks for the tip Greg12

  13. ok, i loaded the file into Nero (with overburning turned on), and i get a message saying there is not enough room to burn it. i know my burner supports overburning, so is there some other setting in Nero you have to tweak to do this?

  14. Sorry, I was away for a while, so it took some time to get back to this.

Baldrick, "Akai: did you use that method or do you have any special method??????"

No, my Brother's BTC CD Writer came with NTI CD Maker 2000. That program opens with a wizard that offers several quick button options. One of them is simply Data Disc, so when I burn DivX I use that button.

However, the discs I've burned that were in excess of 800 MB total were all done as VCDs using VCDEasy. The GIGASTORAGE discs I burn with have a maximum capacity of 807 MB. VCDEasy adds approximately 10-12 MB of files to format and setup VCD (maybe a little more if you include MPEG stills). So I configure TMPGEnc to produce an MPEG file of 794 MB, just under the 795 MB ceiling.

So I guess it is possible that a more complete manual method must be used to burn a pure data disc in excess of 700 MB. Perhaps you would be able to manage the feat using CDRDAO/CDRWin. Sorry for the confusion.
