  1. i'm getting this problem with VCD and SVCD: the movie will play fine for about 30 seconds, then speed up for one or two seconds, and then lag for half a second to catch back up. It only happens on SOME movies, not all... but its very annoying!

i'm pretty sure its not a bitrate problem, because vcd's at CBR 1150kbps AND svcd's at VBR 2100kb/sec max 2500 both have this problem.

I'm especially having problems with Black Hawk Down.

    any ideas?

Hi there, I also have an RCA RC5240P. I noticed that the player is very good with almost every type of vcd. However, I noticed that it does not like film source framerates. Is the source framerate 23.976 fps? If so, always use mpeg 2 and make sure that "3:2 pulldown on playback" is selected. I just made a coaster because Along Came a Spider encoded to NTSC Film. The video plays nice but then speeds ahead and this really screws up the a/v sync. My only advice is to select "3:2 pulldown on playback" or change the frame rate to 29.97(if you are in an NTSC area).

maybe if you get the Blackhawk Down SVCD to work you could sedn a copy my way
Good luck, feel free to e-mail me at justin_ward700@hotmail.com, I have alot of experience with this player.

  7. word. 3:2 fixed the problem. must have been that 24fps FILM.

although, I am still going to return my RCA player because it has a terrible picture. It's a great player, but if you care about picture quality at all get something else.

I think im gonna get a panasonic (great picture) and a DVD-R, you can get them for only like $250 now.

I wouldn't return that RCA player yet. What is your proof of poor picture quality? I hope you are using a DVD as a reference and not a VCD. Also, how is it hooked up to your TV? The RCA always looks great for me. I plugged it into an NEC projector using a component video-VGA converter and it was great. If you are seeing noise or grain it could be due to cheap cables.

  9. bleh... i returned it. and bought a panasonic. for $149

i found my problem... it was my cable! i was using component. when watching Gladiator on DVD, some parts had shadows on their faces, and when maximus is talking to caesar about 17 mins. into the movie, you can see shitty errors all over his white fur...

so i plugged it in with all 3 connections. Composite, then S-Video, then Component. Here's what i found:

Composite didn't have the errors, but the colors were a little washed out.

S-Video had great colors, and no errors.

Component had errors, colors were dark, and too red.

I'm gonna go back to Target and snatch another RCA and hook it up with S-Video. If i get the same results, i'm going to keep the RCA and take back the panasonic and component cables. You can have a nice nite out with your girlfriend for $30!

  10. alright. target was out so i got it on clearence at radio shack for $99. not bad.

i plugged them in side by side and switched back in forth between 3 movies and the two different players. it's clear the panasonic beats the RCA in quality... but the question is, do i want quality, or 50 extra bucks in my pocket?

however, i just found amazon.com has the RV31K for $129 with a 30 dollar rebate, so i think i'm gonna take back both the RCA and panasonic RV32, and order the RV31K from amazon for 99 bucks.

if you care about picture quality at all i suggest you do the same
