  1. Is there a way to transfer any type of data to miniDV tapes as a backup storage? Just a thought...

Let me quote a post from Usenet:

This question pop's up here three to four times a year. There are a
couple of obstacles in the way to do what you want

    1) The DV spec requier to maintain a given format. In other words,
your word files would have to be formatted as video data for the
camcorder to write it to tape and read it back again. This lowers the
amount of data that you could store on tape quite a bit.

    2) The DV specs do not guarantee that the datatransfer from and to
tape is error free. This means that in order to perform a backup all
data would have to be re-read and in case of error a block would have
to be rewritten, reread again to make sure it's ok and so on. This
would slow down the process by 100%

    3) The wear and tear on the heads. You could of course use a cheap
camcorder, but I'm not that sure that it really would pay off compared
    to say DAT Tape drives.
