  1. The new Apex player, the AD-1600, plays .avi files, correct? Does anyone know if it will play the .avi files encoded with the SMR codec? I've got upwards of 50 movies from SMR, and it would be great if i could burn them off and toss them in the player... saves me hella hard drive space.

No the 1600 does not play AVI's...The phrase .."Windows Media Player" in their advertising was a poor choice of phrasing...which makes us all think that it's the Windows Media Player from windows and will support anything....NOPE. From the manual for the 1600:
WMA refers to a new format of music files available over the internet. Like music? Playback up to 22 hours of
CD quality sound using Micosoft Windows Media Audio files burned onto a CD from your computer.

  3. Ah. I see. Someone made a post over at Amazon that they bought this player, and that they got it to play AVI files. The author of this report said they changed the file extensions on the AVI files to .MPG or to .DAT and that the 1600 played them just fine. I thought it was too good to be true.
