My DVD player says it plays Windows Media Files, but I am not sure how to author one, and when I do, how do I burn it properly for it to play in the set-top?

    Anyone done this?

  3. What DVD player do you have? I've been looking for one that would play wmv (video) files, but I don't think it exists. My guess is that your player will play wma (audio) files, not video.

  5. Windows Media Encoder - free from MS:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/wm7/encoder.asp

The quality of MPEG will probably be better than many wmfs.

Check your manual - to watch wmf files it'll probaby read them like mp3s - in data disc mode.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

Better than MPEG? Not necessarily - WMV is built on the old ASF format, which is where DivX is hacked from (MPEG4). MPEG4 is the basis of Quicktime .MOV format, and emphasised by Apple in the new release of QuickTime6.

WMV can look good or bad, depending on many factors, same as MPEG. But you'll find that properly encoded WMV will look better than standard VCD - it's a newer format with differing approach to video frame encoding...
