Dumb newbie situation ...
I have a Philips 825 DVD player that is supposedly able to handle VCD's and SVCD's. I have read about the model in the hardware compatibility area, and some people have suggested upgrading the firmware. So I have downloaded the latest firmware and burned it onto a CDR. I followed the instructions for upgrading the firmware with the CDR, but when I put the disk into the DVD player, I get a "disk error" message.
I am wondering if the problem might be that I might not be "finalizing" my CDR? I am just using XP's file manager to move the firmware files onto the CDR ... and I don't see any feature in XP to "finalize" the disk.
Any help would be appreciated.

marshdom,
Instructions: You need to burn a CD-R in Mode 2 CDROM-XA ISO9660 which contains the files "xxxxxxxx.007" and "DOWNLOAD.02A" only (where xxxxxxxx represents the version and revision of the firmware). Once you have done this:
Switch on the player and wait for initialising to complete
The display will read 'No Disc'
Open the drawer, insert the disc and close the tray. Do NOT press 'play'
The new firmware will load automatically and, when completed, the tray will open once again.
Remove the disc and close the tray by pushing gently on the front edge. Do NOT use the 'close' button
Switch off the power and then switch on again
Re-programming is now complete
Note: Philips manufactured and shipped a large amount of their players with a PROM rather than a FlashMEM IC. On these players, it is impossible to flash-upgrade the firmware from a CD-R. Should you continue to get errors while trying to upgrade the firmware in your player, and you're absolutely certain that you have followed the instructions correctly, then you may have one of these players. You will need to telephone your local Philips Technical Support desk (see the player's manual) to have it upgraded. -

>> Instructions: You need to burn a CD-R in Mode 2 CDROM-XA ISO9660
Sorry ... dumb newbie here ... but can you tell me how to do this? I have the files and instructions that you included, but I don't know if I'm burning the CD-R "in Mode 2 CDROM-XA ISO9660." I'm just copying those two files over onto a CD-R in the Windows XP file manager (or Windows Explorer ... whatever its called these days). I don't think that this process "finalizes" the CD-R ... and I don't know if there is any way to finalize CD-R's in XP. Does anyone out there know? Is finalizing the same thing as "Mode 2 CDROM-XA ISO9660"??? If I can't do this just in XP's file manager, is there some sort of freeware out there that will let me do it ... or do I need to buy some burning software (and, if so, what do you recommend)?
Sorry for all the questions (goes with the territory of being a dumb newbie ... and I HAVE done tons of searches!). And thank you for the info on my Philips model. If I can figure out how to correctly burn my CD-R with the updated firmware files and it still doesn't work, I'll follow your advice and call Philips.
Thanks again. -
I know that I'm not supposed to bump ... but I fell off the first page and I'm still hoping for some answers ...
