first time buyer - some advice

i have used this site (which is an excellent resource) to narrow down my selection to

Pioneer DV-444S DVD Player

Toshiba SD120E DVD Player


I want a player that will play mp3, vcd and svcd.

can anyone give me advice on these (i read all the comments in the dvd players section and there seems to be little to choose between them)

also will any type of divx, vcd , svcd movie play on these? do they fill the whole tv screen? can you adjust what is displayed ie on the pc you can change your resolution and switch to full screen. i was wondering how these films display through a dvd player to tv.

I did tons of research into DVD players before I bought mine and I would highly recommend it to anyone. It's a Hiteker AD-700. (In countries outside Australia, Hitekers go under the brand name of Apex, but it's basically the same player.)

This player is made in China, plays CD-Rs and CD-RWs, plays VCDs and SVCDs and MP3 discs, is region-free, can play RCE discs and is Macrovision-disabled. It has an onboard Dolby Digital decoder and DTS out. The picture & sound quality are excellent & I have never had any problems whatsoever. And it was very cheap, too - cheaper than most Pioneers and Toshibas.

It will not play DivX movies but then again nor will any other player on the planet. VCD and SVCD playback are indeed fullscreen. VCD quality is quite good (depending on your encoder - I use Panasonic's) and SVCD quality is absolutely superb if your source material is good and you encode properly with TMPGEnc or the new version of the LSX Premiere plugin.

There is quite a "community" of Hiteker/Apex owners on various websites. This player is almost a "cult" DVD player amongst aficionados because of its value for money and superb features.
