    I have only about 100 megs of space on my drive so I need to rip the audio from an avi directly to mp3 rather than avi>wav>mp3
    is there anyway I can do this?

    Hmm, you are trying to fit 10lbs of crap into a 5 pound bucket. Any prog which would do the conversion would need that 100 free meg and some just for TEMP space while the conversion was going on. Might be time to do some housekeeping or buy a bigger drive.
