i converted my pal avi file into svcd mpeg using tmpgenc. It came out well but squashed the sides making it portrait. What setting would I need to overcome this.

Did the file appear as "squashed" or did your burned SVCD appear "squashed". If it is the former, it is normal SVCD video, go ahead abd burn it on an CD-RW to check. If it is the latter, we may need another template for you.
