  1. I never thought to hunt down information regarding the whole DVD process... But it seems that that movies I have cannot be played by regular means... I'm just wondering if there is a way to get these working.

I have a Sony DVP-NS315 (from Sears).. Seeing as I posted here... in newbie.. I might as well ask a few questions... and see what I can get figured out.

1] My DVD player is hopeless and I should return it for $ and get something else...
2] I don't know if Region codes between the movie and the player are different.
3]I see a few hacks for other Sony DVD players would it be safe to try them...

    *sigh*

    Thanks In advance guys/girls.

[edit: If there is a way to fix this... should it be done to every VCD that I come across to ensure that it will work?]

1] if you do check the dvd player list before getting a new one. http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

3] some are risk free, like remotecontroll hacks, reflashing can be risky but not to bad. i had the dealer flash it. for a few bucks.

It seems the more you pay for your DVD player, the less it plays. I reckon Sony figure if you can afford their gear you can afford regular DVDs. If I were you I would return the Sony and get something cheaper, after checking out the relevant section here. 8)

Apex in the USA and Pacific(?) in the UK.

  4. After taking a 4th look @ the manual.. It says it plays DVD, VCD, DATA and MP3. No mention of SVCD. Maybe I'll read up on the diffferneces between 2 2 and convert them... OR Just get a different player after checking the list of players listed on this site.

  5. If you're going to buy at Sears (or other retail outlets) take one or more of your VCDs/SVCDs and try it in the players.

If you definitely want to play your discs don't try hacking the Sony but get soething that plays what you want. Usually you only hack to get regionfree (VCD/SVCD do not have regions) or macrovision free (to play your DVDs through a VCR to a TV without video in).

  7. Thanks Kitty.. I thought of the same idea after I went out to the store... I'm going to pack up the ns315 and one of the CD's and take a trip back to S-mart () and see what I can see... I'll also keep my eyes open for that pioneer Spicuzza.

On a side note... does it really matter what a VCD is burnt with?

  8. What if I wanted to keep the current player and just downgraded the SVCD... Could I use VCDgear and do it that way (2 step process from what I remember... bin -> mpg... mpg -> bin) ? I'll take a look in some threads and see if I can't find something...

  9. if i were you i'd take it back and get a decent pioneer model, my dv340 plays svcds nicely on any brand of media. my mate has a sony and it won't play certain types of cdr vcd's (i think it's ones with blue bottoms, i forget now).

  10. I snagged a new one today and it plays SVCD's but it does it very choppy... I'm not really too miffed about it for some reason... I think I'll just convert them to VCD and keep it easy...

I'll search the forum for help for that... I'm sure there are a load of threads for it.
