  2. Anything in your area that does Cable or DSL is your best choice. No one does that 'per minute' crap anymore. Unless that is, if you live in Europe, Austrailia or Japan.

Ahh Australia - I love my country, the only place where both the broadband operators - Telstra Bigpond and Optus Home conspire together to and squeeze your balls hard with cut rate broadband.

mgs2 - You may or may not know but Optus is introducing GB limits but if you go over the montly limit they don't charge anymore they just cut your access speed to 28.8K !!! Yah!!! You don't really need broadband speed do you?

I do not think this qualifies under the cheap category.....But I am on some new Bellsouth (US) thing called Closed Fiber Loop......Like DSL but your neighborhood must be wired with Fiber Optic Cables to the station link.
I can get speeds up and down between 3.5 and 10MBps all the time.
Cost is the same as DSL here, about $45 a month ...unlimited..always on.
Now the thing that bugs me is I still have to wait for servers to bounce me the info.....Now they are the weakestlink (slowest part)

Australia, yeah nice place, used to live there once. Every business will conspire to squeeze your balls for all they can. Just open a bank account and see what collusion really is. Tough luck skippy you're SOL on a friendly ISP.

Not true for the UK. That per minute crap is long gone from here, thank God. I have been on a flat rate for ages, like most other people here in the UK. I don't even know one person that pays for it per minute, but I think it is different in mainland Europe though...

Well... France has cable, so does Germany, so does... In fact most of Europe has cable now. There are still dial -up accounts for those who wish to pay-as-you-go Even Freeserve has BT DSL and now NTL cable.

As for Australia, they are catching up, and like the UK did, just wating for those to offer a free service where you just pay a local call charge, hang on in there I'm sure its on its way...

Australia had it but both the major providers have canceled flat rate plans - but now they have gone back to xGB per month!

I'm still dialing into the National Institutes of Health for all my ISP needs. So basically I'm still not paying for it.
