Does any body know if any one of those DVD players can play 352x480 XVCD's without any weird distortions in the picture?

You might check the DVD compatibility list, but since 352x480 is a supported DVD standard resolution, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't play it back correctly.

The reason I am asking is because last week I tested the Sharp DV-740, which is listed in the DVD compatibility list as being able to play VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, MP3, and even miniDVD, but I could not make it play a XVCD with 352x480 resolution. The picture looked squashed vertically no matter which playback settings I used in the DVD player
