Not all DVDs are decrypted. Maybe the ones you did just happen to be some of them. If you run them thru SmartRipper, it may report the KEY as 00000000 or something...

Good point, some DVD are indeed not macro visioned.
Also, I think once you load one of the DVD player.
Sometime a hook is make to the media player so it is dvd enable afterward. -
Yeah, it is true you can copy straight to your hard drive and play them if the movie isn't encripted. Most XXX rated DVD are unencripted. You won't be able to do it with mainstream movies though.

From some of the posts I've read recently, it seems that some people are confusing between Macrovision and CSS.
Macrovision is the copy protection system that stops you from plugin your DVD player into a VCR and taping it. The DVD video does not inherently have the Macrovision signal. Rather, there is a flag in the video stream that tells the PLAYER to generate it.
All modern VCRs have additional circuitry (automatic gain control I think -- aka AGC) that will detect the Macrovision signal and make it apparent.
That is, if you rip a DVD (that is decrypt it digitally and then encode it to S/VCD), Macrovision will not be an issue.
This gets to to content scrambling system or CSS. This is what stops you from just copying a DVD. The VOB files (which contain the video and audio data) are encrypted. The key is in a part of the DVD that can only be read in hardware during authentication.
This is why you need programs like DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper to "decrypt" the data on a DVD first before you can convert it to S/VCD. As others mentioned above, not all DVDs are encrypted -- in which case you can just copy it directly.
