    Hello,

I'm trying to convert an mpg file from PAL to NTSC as described in the tutorial on this site, and no matter what I try I can't seem to get TMPG-Enc
to open the file from the orginal SVCD iso-burn of it. I went to TMPG-Enc.net and downloaded the very latest/greatest version also. I've tried everything suggested in the tutorial from this site, but the one link on that page for trying one more thing is broken right now..

    Can anybody please help me...!?

  2. I don't think that TMPGEnc will open MPEG2 files directly.

Run DVD2AVI and select the MPEG2 file (you will have to Browse all files *.*). After it completes running, use the D2V file for video and the MPA for audio.

    Good luck,

Are you taking the DAT file from the disk and trying to encode that. Normally this is not a problem, but like bewley said, TMPG will not open all file formats directly.

    Dad-Frabit!!!,

I'm getting so frustrated I'm thinking about returning my new player for one that plays PAL as well as NTSC! I just tried using DVD2AVI to make a mpeg-audio split that will open in TMPG-Enc, but now it appears that DVD2AVI has frozen near the end of the encode or split process!

I also tried using VCDGear, latest version, but that wouldn't open the mpeg-2 .mpg file from the SVCD because it was written as read-only on the CD!!!

I'm feeling totally road-blocked in every direction now!!

    What next? Anybody?

    PS:

I can't even copy the whole mpeg file from the CD because I get a "cyclic redundancy error" near the end of the 800+Mb copy to HDD in Wincrap2K. If I could, I'd copy the mpg file to HDD and then turn off the read-only attribute so that I could try it again in VCDGear...

  7. VCDGEAR aint gonna work on an MPEG2. I think you are out of luck there.

It sounds to me like you have a problem with your CD-R. First thing to do is inspect the disc and make sure there are no fingerprints or smudges around the edges -- often this causes read errors near the end of a disc.

If the disc is clean, grab a copy of CDCheck from here:

    http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/

Try the recovery tool to copy the MPEG to your hard drive. If you only have a bad block or two, you may be able to use DVD2AVI with out a hitch... However, if you have a lot of bad blocks, it will be more difficult... Just remember you can set the input "range" you want to convert in DVD2AVI by using the [ and ] buttons. Start it at the beginning and then mark right before the errors. I've done this before and have successfully recovered (fully or mostly) and re-encoded several discs.

    Good luck,
    - bewley
