  1. i converted a bunch of movie files by using handbrake to reduce their file size and i had set the audio bitrate to mp3 96 kbps. i am considering changing the audio bitrate to aac 128 kbps by opening each movie is avidemux, selecting copy for video, selecting aac (lav) for audio and then selecting 128 kbps and then saving the file. i want confirmation that the audio in the movie will still be ok if i do that and nothing will spoil

is using avidemux a good way to do the conversion or there is a better way?

The basic principal is fine >> copy the video + re-encode the audio.

Now it gets more technical and I am probably not the guy to answer this. But....

It is established that aac at the same bitrate as mp3 is superior due to better sampling. Yet I hardly think that increasing the bitrate for the aac will improve the quality since you have already sampled it quite low and you can not put back what you have taken out. And you increase your filesize in the process.

Equally, I guess (and this is where someone with more knowledge than me will assist) that even a conversion from mp3 to aac at the same bitrate will not improve the quality since data has already been lost in the mp3 conversion.

But let your ears be the judge. If either increased bitrate aac or same bitrate aac sound better then you have the option (just save to a new filename as a precaution)

Or go back to your original source - assuming you still have it - and encode the audio to aac.

PS: That PM was ignored. It was not welcome and count yourself fortunate that I did not report it.

Re-encoding your already screwed up 96 kbps mp3 audio will not make it better, only worse. If you want better audio go back to your original source (assuming it was better than 96 kbps mp3) and re-encode directly to aac.

  4. what is done is done. i don't have the original movie files and getting them again and converting them again is a huge hassle. honestly, the audio sounds exactly the same to me and i cant tell the difference between a movie which uses mp3 96 kbps and the original movie file

next time i use handbrake i will use aac
