  1. Does tooLAME create a substantially better mpeg layer-2 file than Tmpgenc alone? Or just faster? Tmpgenc seems to create mpa files from AVIs very rapidly and with CD quality. I'm just wondering if there's a noticable difference in comparison.

Yes there is. toolame produces substantially better quality audio. I recommend you use it as an external encoder in TMPGenc.

Also many people have reported a very noticable tinny sound when using TMPGenc for audio encoding. Im not sure if this is directly caused by the conversion from wav to mpeg audio or by the conversion from 48kHz to 44kHz, but I believe its the latter.

Honestly, as good TMPGenc is for video it is very deficient for audio in every way. For the best possible quality use toolame as an external audio tool and another external frequency changer from within TMPGenc as well. Both options can be enabled in the environmental settings/external tool tab. You will need a fairly recent version of TMPGenc to use the frequency changer though. I use ssrc.exe for my freqency changer because I have heard it is the best in terms of both speed and quality.

  3. I agree with everything adam has just said.
    I use TOOLame always now.
I would like to give the maker of TMPGEnc partial credit for allowing external wav encoders to easily plug-into TMPGEnc. At least they have made that step simple.

  4. What's 2nd best after toolame.exe - every once in a while, I get a WAV from DVD2AVI that crashes toolame (I've tried many versions, and they all crash). TMPGenc doesn't - so I've used it. Seems to sound OK. However, I don't let TMPGEnc do 48-44 -> that does seem to be problematic.

Any comments on whether ssrc.exe is better than DVD2AVI at highest quality for 48-44 conversion?
