I had the previous XP installed for many months using a FAT32 filesystem and Smartripper never had any problem. Last saturday i've re-installed a new XP on NTFS filesystem and re-installed/copied software i need (smartripper included). In the previous installation (the old one) i first installed ASPI 4.60 and then udpated them to 4.70 in the new installation i've installed directly 4.70 ASPI drivers. Now in this new environment when i start Smartripper it says:

    Aspi- Adapter Available
    try to unlock drive
    ...wait for a while...(i have a Pioneer 105s)
    Read DVD Structure
    Switch To WinIO
fails to unlock the first vob file.

Is this an ASPI problem, or what else i'm very confused at the moment...hope some1 could help me please.
    Thanks in advance

I had this same problem and it seems to have been caused, in my case, by the installation of the ASPI 4.70 drivers. I just used forceaspi to reinstall the 4.60 drivers and my problems were gone.

but i'd like to avoid to install other proggy like powerdvd or something else, why should i when first all was ok without any addictional program?
I'll try to re-install aspi 4.60 and then upgrade to 4.70.
But i'm still confused why in the previous xp inst after i had installed 4.60 and then 4.70 was all ok?
Hope some1 could explain in deeper detail i'd like to understand.

  6. I have the same problem, no asapi adapter avaiable however smart ripper then goes ahead a completes the job. Can anyone tell me where I can get the Asapi driver 4.70 if that's the one that works?

It was ASPI 4.70 that din't works (for me). I've re-installed ASPI 4.60 and still SmartRipper didn't work properly (when i exec aspichk it gave me red screen and report and error 0xE3), i've then executed DvdDecrypter and all gone OK. Re-executed Smartripper and finally i was able to rip again.
I guess was ASPI, try to install first 4.60 and eventually 4.70 or simple leave 4.60, search for drivers on Adaptec site, u'll find it there.
    Cheers

Now with 4.60 installed every time XP boot aspichk give me again the red screen saying me "ASPI is properly installed, but one of the helper drivers has failed to initialize (0xE3)" so i have to exec Smartripper again and aspichk switch to green.
How do i can CLEAN completely these ASPI and re-install a clean 4.60 without reformatting all?

    Thx 4 ur time.

  9. I am curious whats 'new' in 4.70 as opposed to 4.60. I had heard of these problems before, so when I did a clean XP install I then did ASPI 4.60 and have no problems. I have no need (that I know of) to 'upgrade' to 4.70. Anyone know whats supposed to be new?

  10. Hi guys,

I have had exactly the same problem - the only solution for me was to use Forceaspi to install 4.60.

There are 4 ASPI files installed under XP by any of these utils. Now, for most OS's these can be installed in 2 pairs that must have the same version level. In XP it would seem that they must all be the same version for ASPI to work. The problem with the 4.70 upgrade is that it leaves 2 of the files at v4.60 (which would be OK in almost every other OS).
BTW, you can use checkaspi from the full Adaptec 4.60 suite to check the files and version nos. Killaspi from the Forceaspi suite can be used to remove the aspi layer.

    Works for me

  12. Fabietto,

Sorry, yes these are programs - well, forceaspi is actually a collection of programs - v4.60 of the Adaptec ASPI drivers and some small .bat files that will allow you to (un)install / kill and restore an ASPI layer under all versions of Windoze. Killaspi is one of those .bat files.

If you want to try it, I would suggest a search for FRCASPI17.ZIP, or just "forceaspi" - Google will usually find a couple of locations. I'm not sure about posting a link, as Adaptec were trying to stop the distribution of the file for a while - in fact while they did not have an ASPI download available from their own site - v4.7 is still on the Adaptec site, but exhibits the problem I mentioned earlier in that it installs 2 of the files at level 4.60, which XP does not like.

I suppose the alternative would be to try to locate a copy of the Adaptec v4.60 installation package and try that - if it installs all 4 at 4.60, that should work.

    Hope that makes sense
