Let me start by saying I wasn't sure if this was the proper forum to post this question, but here goes.

AS everyone knows (or should by now) Windows XP does not come with an acceptible ASPI layer installed. Indeed, if you go to the Microsoft web site and read ALL of the info available there on ASPI layer, it seems as if they somewhat admit it may have been an oversight on their part. They even recommend going to the Adaptec site and downloading the layer.

When I first upgraded to XP, I simply installed the ASPI layer I had been using on Windows ME. That was ASPI version 4.6. Four components were installed and ASPI Check reported everything was OK.

Later, I went to the Adaptec site and found that there was a new ASPI version 4.7 with SPECIAL instructions for how to install in Windows XP. I removed the old ASPI layer and followed the instructions to install version 4.7. After installing I used ASPI Check (the latest version) and found only two components installed, two other were missing as compared with the old installation, but even at that, it still reported that everything was OK.

With either of the installations, I didn't seem to have any problems. Ripping speeds using SmartRipper were in the 4X to 12X range.

Adaptec definitely says NOT to install ver. 4.6 in XP.

I have read some threads here and at other places that claim not to install ver. 4.7 in XP, because of potential problems with it.

My question is this. I am about to do a clean re-install of XP for other reasons. Does anybody reading this post have a definitive answer as to what version layer should be installed?

Incidentially, as expected, without installing any layer, ripping stays in the 1X to 2X range, so installation of an ASPI layer is definitely needed.

  2. Use ONLY v4.6 ! the v4.7 is BAD!
Forget what Adaptec say, ask anyone, the v4.7 is nothing more then a trouble maker.
