I'm using the How to Capture to Divx guide to capture a tv show and the dropped frames just kept on increasing with like every seconds.
My system is:
PIII 500(Running Windows XP)
320MB RAM
IBM 8.4GB Drive

i have a similar prob and i think it is windows xp related....
i am trying to do the same thing and my configuration is:
- AMD Duron K7 750Mhz on Gigabyte 7ZX series motherboard
- 256MB PC-133 SDRAM
- 10.2gig Quantum harddrive (5400rpms) ATA 66 Cable
- Windows XP Proffessional
- AGP 32MB TNT2 Riva M-64 Graphics card
- PCI LifeView FlyVideo '98 TV Tuner/Capture card
it does not matter if i use any other codec, or change the settings on the DivX codec to its minimum quality, it still drops frames!
i even disable virus scanner and all other programs but nothing seems to work, even defragged, no luck there either......
i might try to put an ATA100 cable on my hard drive (i no my burner dont support ata100 so could b a prob....)
please tell us wat we are doing wrong..... -
when u vid-cap with a codec that uses compression, depending on the compression ratio, your processing speed will be a huge factor in ur dropped frames rate.
more compression = more dropped frames(dependant upon cpu power)
i would recommend using as little compression as ur hard drive space will allow -
i also used no compression, mine drops frames when the thing is uncompressed, im TRYING to use Virtual Dub 1.4.10 with DivX 3.11 alpha Low Motion Capture.
-
I went back to Virtualdub 1.4.0, and it only drops a few frames now and then to keep the video and audio synced.

i went back to version 1.3c the other day and it didnt do any better than the latest version

Try free vcr for your captures. It drops less frames then v-dub. I can capture divx4.12 352x480 max birate and drop very little frames. My system is an atholon 850 256 meg of memory. As you can tell my system isn't very strong but free vcr works great. Just download it from the tool section.

I too had this problem when I switched from W98 to XP..here is what has worked for me:
- Defragment Hard Drive (right click drive in My Computer to analyze)
- Select "File" & "Allocate Disk Space" before capturing
- Use Huffy compression codec (fewer drops than uncompressed)
I am using a Sony Vaio P4 1.8 / 512Mb memory / Radeon All-in-Wonder 64Mb AGP. I capture 720x480 at 29.97fps and 48,000 kHz 16bit Stereo.
Uncompressed, my CPU usage stays around 18-20% and around 50% using the Huffy compression...I have achieved better results using compression (captured 1 hour with no dropped frames...uncompressed works well for about 10mins, then drops frames like crazy)....haven't tried the Divx codec as I am burning DVD-R. -
ok, defrag said i didnt need to defrag my harddrive....thank god....
now, i downloaded and used FreeVCR and i can encode video at 15 fps at 352x288 with high quality in there. there are no frames droped and it looks pretty smooth. and it also says 0% CPU usage?? but when i go to capture the audio, there is only about 3 seconds of audio and not all of the audio is there. there are parts missing.
i also have this audio problem in VirtualDub and i have tried different codecs but no luck, now wats going wrong? -
I only use Virtualdub for subtitling and editing, not for capturing. Try Vidcap instead.
