After recent troubles with my computer (see past posts) I have decided that a total reformat of the hard drive is probably the best way to fix most of the shit. Basically my question now is: I have a choose of Windows 98SE or WinMe to install so just wondering what you guys think is the best out of those two for a simple home computer? I will probably further upgrade to Win2k or WinXP at a later date but for now these are the only two choices.
Thanks for any help

There is no question about it, you either use 98SE or 2000, not ME or XP.
Reasons you ask ?
98SE and 2000 have a much greater compatibility with programs then both ME and XP put together! I think that is enough reason to choose
Check the forums for compatibility problems with ME and XP and you won't believe your eyes!Email me for faster replies!

I'm with Sefy. Find a copy (legal or not) of 2000 and use that.
I don't have any experience with XP, but I'm not anxious to try it, from all of the things that I've been hearing. -
Between 98 and ME, it has got to be 98.
Give yourself 50 lashes for even considering Win ME, thats more like a downgrade.
Win98 SE is the best of the 9x family. -
Answer to the origional q is same as d4n13l...
WIN 98SE. -
If you get to choose betwean 98se or 2k, I'd get windows 2000. much more stable to me.

dont consider 2000 if you are at all a gamer
sim theme park wont run on it and if you have certain capture cards that rely onVFW then your up the creek
go with either w98se or winme
they are both good and if you have a GOOD power supply and cooling is ok you wont ever get those crashes you always hear about -

I've seen enough 2000 and XP's go boom! and the problem with them, unlike 98SE, when they go down, you can practicly kiss your stuff goodbye!, with 98 you can go into a DOS mode and maybe even fix up the system.
Personaly I think 98SE gives much more control to the user then both 2000 and XP put together, but that's my choice, you guys do what you think is best for you.Email me for faster replies!

Windows98SE i'll prefer over 2000 any day, any time, any where, any way!
2000 is crap for compatibility, your must have certified drivers to make it work or your gonna have problems, it's ASPI is pathetic, all the gimiks they put into it just slow it down, it requires a more stronger computer to do the same thing Windows98SE does.
Windows98SE is the basic system which does everything it needs to do, and i'm using it, and if I used it to create my guides, that already tells you something.Email me for faster replies!

I agree with Sefy in picking Windows 98SE over 2000. To understand why, we have to examine what each system is:
Windows 98SE - Windows 95/98 upgrade. Not top-of-the-line, but supports most software and drivers. Does crash, but easily fixed.
Windows ME - Windows 98 for the moron. This OS was specificly designed because Microsoft needed a "new" OS for non-NT users. Since the majority of the consumers found 95/98 difficult to use, MS decided that with more bells and whistles, they could make ME look simple. What really happened is that the space used for the bells and whistles was formerly the space that made 98SE work. So, now you can have a "tada" sound play and a paper-clip dance as your OS crashes once again.
Windows 2000 - It's really just NT 5.0. These OS are used by people who like to work on the internet and networks. It was suppose to be a merger between 98SE and NT 4.0, but it really wasn't. Unless you want a NT OS, stay away from 2000.
Windows XP - Rather than use the slogan "R U eXPerinced?" they should have said, "Do you have drivers for this system?" I don't know too much about this system except that finding drivers for this OS is like trying to get Jennifer Love Hewitt's telephone # - only if you are reeeaaally lucky.
