hmmm, that sounds like a real cutting edge place to work! Where can I send my resume? Every corporate boardroom operates on the unspoken mantra of maintaining the status quo and creating barriers to competition from within and without. The challenge that anyone climbing the ladder must overcome is internalizing the schizophrenia that suffuses corporate doublespeak that gives constant lip service to truly fire-able ideas such as "thinking outside the box" but really exists to evade antitrust lawsuits. But more importantly, the true recipient of that comment was the manager's boss (CEO?). So that technical person is not really that smart if s/he thought the comment was meant for her/him. It is clearly time for your friend to dust off their resume. They have been tagged as a risk to the status quo, and I don't blame management. I wouldn't want that kind of rogue in my organization either.
