  1. Will a faster video card
1.shorten the rendering/converion of say avi --> vcd or svcd
    2. or is the speed at which it converts strictly cpu / motherboard / amount of ram?

Sorry I am a real newb
I have an AMD Duron 900 w/8mb video card? (so will a 64mb video card be smart to buy?)

    Thanks in advance

  2. Better video cards and additional RAM are always good, but as far as hardware components are concerned, the time required for encoding video is overwhelmingly dependent on CPU muscle. Vid card power won't help noticeably, and more RAM won't help much.

If your board will take a 1200MHz Duron, I think they go for $70-80 (USD) and would noticeably (but not dramatically) speed things up. If your board can take an Athlon instead, an XP1800+ will run about $200-210, and would hasten encoding (and everything alse you do) dramatically. It depends on your budget and what your motherboard will accept.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
