I need a utility to lower bitrate of existing videos in a simple manner for non expert users. Freemake video converter was appealing but throws virus warnings and there's no mac equivalent. Suggestions?

At first it may be a bit contradictory but ffmpeg with ready to use batch can meet your expectations. If not then some ffmpeg GUI can be used.

Avidemux; Handbrake; Hybrid; VLC (can convert too, limited).

Always remember: Every conversion to a lossy target format will reduce the quality. Especially if the target bitrate is lower than the original rate, but the format in general stays the same.
