    Is it possible to stream DV AVI from a Windows PC to a dlna compatible device like a TV or Bluray player ? That is, play DV AVI on a PC in a software player like mpc or vlc and send via dlna to a tv/bluray player.
    If anyone has succesfully accomplished this feat please advise.
    Thanks!

    The "player" includes the decoder + decompressor.

    Streaming = Server (still compressed) -> network -> Client/player
    In this case, the client is the TV or BDplayer. Since there are no KNOWN models that accept DV (of any container format), streaming will not work.

    Using an HTPC with DV decoding and outputting uncompressed to VGA/DVI/HDMI, etc. will work, but I don't think that's what you're asking.

    Ok so the destination (in this case TV or Bluray player) is what actually has to decode DV ? and the software player merely acts as a streaming source ? then I can see how that wouldn't work.

    Yes I was asking about dlna via network, not htpc via hdmi. However, I have not ruled it out yet. My only issue with that is what is on the TV screen is just a copy of the laptop screen. In the sense that all the resizing and chroma upscaling, deinterlacing is still being done on the PC. I want to be able to let the device of my choice handle all that video processing. If its possible to just send a 'as-true-to-the-source-as-possible' signal that is 480i to a tv or outboard video processor to do the upscaling and deinterlacing that would be perfect.

  5. It's possible for a DLNA server to transcode on the fly. Here's a 5 second DV AVI file for anyone who wants to test.

    Transcode ? So it will convert it to something else (like mpeg2) anyway ?
    I asking about native true to original DV playback only.

    Yes. Many DLNA servers can transcode on the fly when the client doesn't support a codec.

    Then you're probably out of luck. I'm not aware of any device outside a computer or DV camcorder that can play DV.

    Sample file works on my WDTV Live Plus using Mezzmo with transcoding off. File through DLNA on my Panasonic HDTV doesn't work unless I turn transcoding on.

  10. I have the WDTV Live, the generation just before the Plus. It doesn't play DV AVI directly or via a DLNA server without transcoding.

    Yeah that is one area of the Blu-Ray spec that is on the books but was never implemented by any manufacturers. Major dissing of legacy consumers. Aargghh!

    Thats interesting. Does that mean WDTVL+ is able to decode (not transcode!) DV ?

  13. WDTV Live, WDTV Live Plus, WDTV Live Streamer, whatever version cannot decode DV avi, if it was working for someone, it was transcoded before loading into WDTV or it was not DV avi.

    Oops... I must have still had transcoding on the first time I streamed to my WDTV Live Plus (though I thought it was off) because it doesn't work now on either my Live Plus or Live Streaming. I definitely turned it of when I tried it directly to my HDTV and it didn't work, then turned it on and it did. Sorry for getting anyone's hopes up!

  15. I guess none of the media player manufacturers want to pay for a DV license.

    (google translate)
    Screen mirroring PC--->TV (DLNA).
    -Windows Media Encoder
    -Directshow filter to capture the screen (200KB): http://www.umediaserver.net/bin/UScreenCapture.zip
    NOTE: those who want to use another filter to capture the screen you can download from :http://ufpr.dl.sourceforge.net/project/screencapturer/Setup%20Screen%20Capturer%20Reco...%20v0.12.8.exe
    -Serviio.
    Audio capture: some video filters already capture the audio too (create a virtual 'driver' audio) but in most cases do not need this driver, go to the Control Panel, "show all Control Panel items", "Sound" tab recording "Stereo Mix", enable this option.
    Install all programs, run the Windows Media Encoder, choose "broacast the live event" in the next screen select the video filter installed (eg uscreencapture)
    audio leave "stereo mix" or select the virtual driver, move, select "Pull from the encoder" on the next page to Go aparacer data connection, note that numbers,
    especially the door (usual is 8080).
    On the next page there are the screen size options, bitrate, etc, click Next, the next page there is the option to record uam copy of the stream to disk, clear this option,
    Next, check "no, i want to encode ..." Next, the next screen leave it blank, forward, complete.
    Will pop up a msg on IP restriction, click ok at the top click "start encoding" to start capturing and stream.
    save the configuration of the WM Encoder.

    Run Serviio in Library choose "online sources", add, select "live stream" in "source url" enter mms: //127.0.0.1: port that comprised Windows Media Encoder (usual 8080)
    should be something like mms: //127.0.0.1: 8080.
    Done.
