  1. Good day to all, and thank you in advance,

I have been searching all day. I have a Broksonic DRVCR-900A DVD-RW recorder and VCR combo. It is old, I know. I purchased it brand new and barley used it. A while back, the grandkids were here, and the ole lady had them set up in the living room. Every since that day, the dvd says incorrect disc C104. It will play homemade disc of pictures from my computer. It will not play ANY store bought dvds. They are all the correct region. I have always felt that something just needs to be reset. I even called Broksonic. They claim their is no way to reset to factory defaults, no way to change the region code. Just throw it away, it is broke. Because it still plays homemade dvds, I belive it just needs a reset. I have searched this site, and the internet for about twelve hours now and find nothing on a Broksonic. The little you do find says put in another dvd and it will work. I have already tried that. I see over the course of reading that it could be a region code. I don't know if the kids just happened to push the right sequence of numbers, but I cannot figure it out. Any help would be appreiated.

PS, If I am sending this to the wrong place, please correct me. Thank you.

Combo units always were notorious CRAP. It very well could be just "broken".

you could try cleaning the laser lens
if that doesn't work, the laser may be dying.

  4. Cleaning the laser lens is unlikely to help, unfortunately.

The "C104" error is a common electronic glitch in this bargain-basement combo unit. Sometimes it means the region has been accidentally hacked, sometimes it means the laser is going bad, etc. Doesn't matter, really: when you start seeing this error constantly, it essentially means the unit is toast and its time to replace it. The only known reset "fix" is to unplug the unit from AC for a couple days, then plug it back in and pray the glitch evaporated while the power was cut. If that works, great, but if "C104" pops right back up, throw the unit away- its dead.

FWIW, this was a popular cheap combo sold under the Broksonic, Sansui, Orion, Emerson, and Memorex brand names. You can find second-hand examples on eBay or Craigs List almost daily for approx $25, less if missing the remote. If you like the unit, just replace it with another similar model. Just don't expect it to last long: they were pretty flimsy. You might be better off with a used model of a better brand, for around the same price.
