I serached the forum, but didn't find any advice how to convert an anamorphic DVD (1:1.85) to SVCD widescreen. The source is ripped from DVD (720x576), but doesn't look so good on SVCD.Any advice is welcome!

  2. dvd2avi should tell you what the source aspect ratio is...this is wut u put in for source aspect ratio in tmpgenc...

i'm assuming you're gonna watch this on a regular TV...so your output is 4:3 NTSC...

also, for image positioning method..choose full screen (preserve aspect ratio)...or for people like me w/ older version of tmpgenc it's fit to frame (preserve aspect ratio)

  3. Try this:
    *rip dvd with smartripper
*use DVD2AVI to frameserve to Tmpgenc
*Choose "source 16:9" in tmpgen and "output videoformat 4:3"

Hope this is getting you on the right way

I used smartripper to copy the vobs to the HD.DVD2AVI as frameserver didn't work, as tmpgenc waits forever. So I used bbtools to strip the mpeg out of the vob.But the format 1:1,85 is a little bit different to 16:9 (1:1.77).My solution: do nothing, as my TV can handle this:encode to 4:3 and then switch TV to 16:9.Looks nice enough.
BTW: is there any way to tell tmpgenc to use 1:1.85 as source aspect?I only founs 16:9 or 4:3.

Will this stretch the video ? so everythings is taller ?

  7. As the output is 4:3, you will get a letterboxed picture that isn't "stretched". If you choose 16:9 as output youll keep the picture "anamorphic", could be usefull if you own a widescreen-tv. But you dont get the tv to change aspect ratio automaticly like when you play a DVD.

  8. I make perfect looking svcd using dvd2svcd 1.07b4 but I play them on a widescreen tv . The only thing u have to do is change the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3 in dvd2svcd. The movie is encoded without black bars and the tv will stretch your picture into beautiful 16:9 while you play it.

@Flesh-g:I'm using the same solution now.Even if I have no WideScreen TV, my TV can be forced into 16:9 mode and thus giving the desired result.

  11. Hope this hasn't been asked, but what do you do when the DVD is labeled anamorphic 2.40:1? (and you want to convert to SVCD.)

    Thanks much!

nm, I found other posts that answered the question. A search for 2.4:1 didn't find anything, but there are many posts about 2.35:1. Thanks!

  12. if you guys wanna maintain the same aspect ratio of the original dvd, you need to find the source aspect ratio from dvd2avi's info box (either 16:9 or 4:3), it doesn't matter whether the original source is widescreen or not cuz it can be either 16:9 or 4:3 (hence dvd2avi is very useful in this regard)

also, image positioning method => full screen (preserve apsect ratio)

outvideo => 4:3 NTSC (for the regular TVs that most of us use in the USA)
