  1. What do I have to do to download a local copy, preferably an mp4 file, of the full episode now on the www.cnbc.com website of Jay Leno's Garage "Supercars" episode?

I run the Firefox browser latest version on Windows 7 and I have 2 addons to download videos and none of them work for this: VideoDownloadHelper and DownLoadFlashandVideo.

Why are these kinds of addons to unreliable? Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, and sometimes they work but then stop working later for the same type of videos from the same websites where they used to work?

    wrong title
    downloading IS NOT stream recording

if you want to record the stream, that uses different software and records in real time as the video is played

and most, can not record the stream, they have too record the image displayed on the screen
or in a specified window on the screen

look at the 'screen recorders' in the software section

Content producers don't want you downloading their videos. So the server side streaming software manufactures (like Adobe) spend most of their time working on ways to keep you from doing so. So they keep changing the protocols, adding more obfuscation, etc.
