  1. Hi guys Hopefully someone can help.

We are a formula ford race team and would like to be able to send a live on board feed from the racecar to the Paddock/hospitality suite.

We currently have a go pro hero 4 which has wifi we can see 3 routes of how we can do this
    1. Over the circuit wifi? (We would probably have to boost the signal)

    2. With a sender and receiver. Like you would for cctv ? Where not sure about ranges ect.

    3. With 3/4g using a modem ect and steaming over the Internet (this will probably not be very realiable)

Any help would be very7ch appreciated. The main circuit we race at and want this setup for is brands hatch (so not a massive track)

    Thanks

    Adam

This is going to cost a lot of money and effort if you want to do this with professional quality.

Reliable wireless streaming is expensive especially if it has to cover the whole range of the racing circuit.

You are looking at something like this to establish something reliable and with quality up to 2000 feet :

Paralinx Tomahawk 3G-SDI 1:4 Wireless System

In the car you would need special mounting and on the other side you need your regular streaming hardware/software.

I'd say the whole thing, ballpark, sets you back about 25k.

Of course if you drop the live streaming option and simply record poor man's quality and stream after the drive you will be able to do this for about 1 to 2k.

On the other hand the royalties of the live crash coverage may very well cover the cost of the loss!

Yes, I can't picture WiFi working very well. Lots of electrical interference from high performance car ignitions and electronics. Also output power is limited by the feds to keep down interference with other users.

I don't think you will find an inexpensive way to do this, especially reliably sending HD video, which takes a lot of bandwidth.

Since most racing teams have several sponsors, you might have your PR team check to see if one of those high tech companies that specialize in racing radios or video might give you a discount, or even better, some free equipment in exchange for a few inches of advertising on your car. You never know.

  7. What with Doppler effect - how WiFi scale with speed?

Unless the racing car goes in something like warp 5 we don't have to worry about that.

You should and fact that you ignore how error is build in wireless communication when mobility is involved means that probably you are user/customer not engineer - FYI there is lot of factors where error is created and plenty things to accommodate in link budget - frequency drift is one of them as BER growing sometimes exponentially with even insignificant frequency changes.
With complex modulation, reaching Shannon limits everything is important and they need to be designed to deal with fading, multipath and Doppler... In 20MHz channel (802.11n) you have OFDM modulation used and this means that channel is divided for subcarriers - distance between subcarriers decide how Doppler shift will affect error rate and at some point error can be so big that it will determine whole link to point when even with strong signal and no problems with reception you will be not capable to demodulate and decode data as such you will fail.

At racing car speeds the EM Doppler effect is simply too small to worry about.

I suggest you get your facts right before you reply.

What about electrical interference from the racing ignition wires? Most racing engines use solid core copper wires going to spark plugs. They normally don't use suppressed wires because it adds unwanted resistance. That can wreck havoc on any over the air signal.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

Seriously? with subcarriers spaced 0.3125MHz... seem we reading different physics books...
But OK - assume you have right - give me link to some facts - scientific paper, book whatever with experimental results where Vmax is for example 300 - 350kmph

Not sure if they use unsuppressed installation...
