I have been trying to hunt out a hack for region free on this player but can only claim limited success. Here is what I have, if anyone else can help illuminate the process please contribute (I have some R2 discs that are taunting me):

To enter the Test/Program mode:

1. Remove any discs from the tray and turn the unit off from the front panel.

2. Unplug the unit from the wall outlet (AC must be disrupted).

3. Simultaneously press and hold the 'Stop' and 'Play' buttons on the front panel.

4. Continue to hold the buttons while you plug the unit back into the wall outlet.

5. Release the buttons after power has been restored.

6. On the Front Panel Display (FPD) the unit should display a 'TEST 06 J' then quickly turn to 'TEST JC J'. This enters you into the units Test/Program mode.

7. On the Remote Control press the 'Choices' button to cycle through the options:
Press 1 - Displays '------------' in the front panel display
Press 2 - Displays '00 00 31 FD'
Press 3 - Displays 'CHECK'
Press 4 - All LEDs on FPD light up.
Press 5 - Displays '0000 0000'
Press 6 - Displays 'TEST JC J' and starts the cycle over again.

While in '00 00 31 FD' mode pressing the 'Page' button on the remote makes the FDP display a number ending in ';0'. I suspect this is a serial number or system version identifier.

While in 'CHECK' mode pressing the 'Top Menu' button on the remote changes FPD to 'LD ON'. Pressing the '|<<' (Previous) button changes FPD to 'LD 00xx' where xx is any two numbers. Pressing the 'Stop' (Clear) button appears to either clear or enter the selection.

If you press both 'Skip' buttons on the front panel simultaneously then cycle displays change. Where '------------' appeared on the FDP it now displays 'FFFF00049598' and where '00 00 31 FD' was displayed now appears '27 09 31 FD'. Only the FDP displays change, everything else functions as previously described.

To exit the Test/Program mode:

1. Press the 'Power' button to turn the unit off.

2. Press the 'Power' button to turn the unit back on.

Many thanks to whoever wrote the following:

It was not for my machine but by following this previous JVC DVD player hack I was able to get into the test/program mode.
