  1. I was wondering. Why is it that the VCDs I buy manage to utitilize the entire CD, meaning that there are no gaps where you can easily distinguish the burnt and unburnt areas while the VCDs I make always seem to compress all the data as close to the center as possible, leaving the sides with a clear empty space? Is there any software out there that can actually burn VCDs that use the entire disc?

The reason I'm asking is 'cos all my VCDs cant work properly on a vcd player, but does fine on a dvd player! There's the skipping that's driving me mad. I've tried 4x, 2x heck even 1x but nothing works. And the funniest thing is a 5 minute video that I burn can play fine, but anything thirty minutes or more is screwed!! Can anyone help me?

Sounds to me like in "the olden days" when vinyl was around and the first Super Singles (45rpm on a 331/3 size LP) came out. The spiral/track was much wider apart than normal singles and LP's which would cause some Record Players to skip around.

Selfmade/burnt CD-R(W)'s are generally burnt from the inside outwards (quite the reverse to normal LP's) as are pressed/professional CD's. If these companies optimise the data for space I do not know.

As for the problems (as I understood you) with your VCD player - try using a different colour layered CD-R(W) it may help. Otherwise I don't know of any other software that can re-position your data.

  3. Some other reasons could be that your VCD player has compatibility problems with playing that type of CD or it may not support CD-R(W) at all. It could also be that it doesnt play VCD 2.0 .

As for your question about the placing of data on the cds there is no software that can do this as this happens because the professional ones you have have been pressed or stamped by CD presser.

Pressing is the technique used for commercial CD's. The have a master CD (mirror immage of the CD) and it is pressed onto the CD - unlike what we do, we burn them.
