    Basically, Movie.avi + Movie.srt = Movie.mp4

What's a good program? I'm looking at Tencoder. Will MKVMerge do the same thing but with MKVs?

If you are happy with a MKV then yes MKVMerge - just add the video and the sub and away you go. Doesn't take very long to do, only minutes.

  3. Or you can use mp4box. It will import srt as ttxt softsubs.
There are a few GUIs around but none quite as versatile as the command line.

You can also use FFMPEG to add subs to existing MKV or MP4:

If the starting file is other than MP4 or MKV and you wish to end with these formats, change -c:v copy -c:a copy to your favorite codecs such as -c:v libx264 -c:a libvo_aacenc.
