I (still!) am running WinXP Pro using 'Windows Classic" folders. (like Win 98's view).
I have not been able to get a straight answer as to whether Win 7, 8, 8.1 etc are capable of this view. I just dont like the new(er) folders/interface.

Can one have the 'classic' view on these newer versions?? (ie Win 98 view)

(While here) I also have Linux 11.xx (last version of gnome classic) I tried newer versions, & was never able to revert to gnome classic as 'advertised' I dislike the newer interface even more than Windows.

I'm not a chronic complainer, I will be 68 this month, and am set in my ways. Change for the better is a good thing, but change for the sake of change is not. imho.

Yes you can use Classic View on Windows 7 and 8. Go to advanced settings and choose Best Performance (disable aero/metro). Right-click on Desktop go to settings and choose "Classic Windows" theme.

All I ever use is Classic Windows themes. It also makes the system faster because you're not loading that aero/metro crap.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

I tried the classic shell and a few other recommendations but I ended up re-installing Windows 7 and just using the classic view under Personalize and chose solid background and made a dark blue like I had in Windows XP Classic View.

I added a program called Search Everything to replace the piece of crap search in Windows 7. I added another program called Take Ownership which allows me to take ownership of all the files that Windows 7 refuses to let me do anything with since Microsoft thinks that it owns my computer instead of myself. Any time I see a lock on a file or a folder, I right click and choose "Take Ownership" in the right click shell menu to take ownership of the folder and the sub folders and also choose sharing and share both read and write for everyone in my network which is just me. Problem solved. I couldn't use "Properties Plus" in Windows 7 but I found a similar program called "Change File Extension". I think that's about it.

I was using Firefox with customisations that made it look and act like IE 5.5/6.0 but the latest version of FF killed my customisations so I switched to Pale Moon with my FF bookmarks and I had to manually set it up to look like I had FF set up to look like IE 5.5/6.0.

Oh yeah, you can't add details column shell menus in Windows 7 but I was able to get some columns similar to what I had in XP. Instead of Codecs, I've got Audio Tracks and Video Tracks and Frame Width and Frame Height instead of Dimensions.
